ECONOMYNEXT \u2013 Sri Lanka\u2019s overall rate of inflation, as measured by the Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI), rose to more than three-year high of 8.3 percent in October 2026, up from the previous month\u2019s 8.0 percent and breached the Central Bank\u2019s upper inflation target rate of 7 percent for the fourth month, data from the state statistics office showed.<\/p>\n
The CCPI for all items in October rose to 209.9, recording an increase of 0.8 index points or 0.4 percent compared to 209.1 in September.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis represents an increase in expenditure value of Rs.666.63 in the market basket,\u201d the Department of Census and Statistics said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The island nation\u2019s economy witnessed upward price adjustments after the government raised fuel prices by nearly 50 percent following a supply shortage due to Middle East escalation, amid higher global oil prices.<\/p>\n
It last raised the fuel prices with effect from October 1.<\/p>\n
Year-on-year food inflation accelerated to 8.8 percent this month, its highest since May 2023 and rising from 8.7 percent in September.<\/p>\n
However, the Restaurant and Hotels category along with Transport accounted for 87 percent of this month\u2019s rise in inflation, the data showed.<\/p>\n
Non-food inflation, year on year, rose to 8.0 percent this month, up from the previous month\u2019s 7.7 percent.<\/p>\n
Core inflation, year on year, accelerated to a more than three-year high of 5.6 percent in October 2026 from 5.4 percent in the previous month.<\/p>\n
The Central Bank kept its Overnight Policy Rate steady in its latest monetary policy meeting last month and said inflation expected be higher single digit through the first quarter of 2027 and ease to 5 percent thereafter. (Colombo\/October 30\/2026)<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
