{"id":163,"date":"2026-10-16T01:40:30","date_gmt":"2026-10-16T00:40:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sripuwath.com\/index.php\/2026\/10\/16\/matt-pushing-standards\/"},"modified":"2026-10-16T01:40:30","modified_gmt":"2026-10-16T00:40:30","slug":"matt-pushing-standards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sripuwath.com\/index.php\/2026\/10\/16\/matt-pushing-standards\/","title":{"rendered":"Matt: Pushing Standards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We get a lot of flak at <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/\">WordPress.org<\/a> for supporting older PHP versions, but an area we\u2019ve always pushed the frontier is in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webstandards.org\/\">Web Standards<\/a>, getting websites and browsers evolving together to make the web richer. Ever since I caught the religion from <a href=\"https:\/\/zeldman.com\/\">Zeldman<\/a>, promoting more functionality in the browser has been a life mission. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a little nerdy, but we wanted to do client-side media processing (use all that amazing Apple and Google silicon instead of burdening the poor servers) so we used something amazing Google created called <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.chrome.com\/blog\/document-isolation-policy\">Document Isolation Policy<\/a>. When <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/news\/2026\/08\/mary-lou\/\">WordPress 7.1 \u201cMary Lou\u201d shipped<\/a> these features only worked in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chromium.org\/Home\/\">Chromium<\/a>-based browsers and Mozilla and Webkit\/Apple weren\u2019t keen to support it, but since then <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/mozilla\/standards-positions\/issues\/1074\">Mozilla has expressed support<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/WebKit\/standards-positions\/issues\/399#issuecomment-5844114111\">WebKit has withdrawn their initial concerns<\/a>.
